PROJEKTINFORMATION ABOUT KENYA
Training for Young People
Around four million people live in Nairobi, 51 percent of whom live in slums - there are around 110 settlements - on just 1.5 percent of the land.
The parish of Consolata Shrine has around 60,000 people of different races and tribes. Forty percent of residents are well educated or business people and 40 percent are workers on low incomes of around € 88,-- per month.
The remaining 20 percent are poor and unemployed people who live in appalling conditions.
Father Franco Cellana has done good work in the last two years and the people trust him. He has concentrated in particular in tackling the problems of the young. The people in the Suswa and Deep Sea slums are poor but have a strong desire to make something of their lives. In order to improve their lives they need good jobs and continuous work. Father Franco has managed to find training for young people from the slums. In August 2001, nine young people aged from 17 to 19 received training as shoemakers. They were then guaranteed a job in a workshop in the parish.
We are trying to find more training opportunities for young people so we can continue to help them in future.
Training as a shoemaker for one teenager costs just
€ 130,-- per month.
